In a Manner of Speaking…

In a Manner of Speaking…

I was sitting on the couch a couple of nights ago and my phone lit up.  It was a message from one of my best friends and she dumped a whole lot of encouragement into my lap in the space of about 4 small paragraphs of text.  I read the words she had sent and...

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I would sometimes sneak out of my bed, creep over to the south window in the room I shared with my sister and slowly open the casement. I would sit there with my arms criss-crossed on the sill and let the Kansas wind blow across my face;...

Forever Mine

Forever Mine

I’ve talked with a couple of friends lately who both mentioned that they struggle with one of the foundational tenets of Christianity...the belief that God loves them. They have no trouble whatsoever believing that God loves others...it’s the jump from “them to me”...

For further reading….

CS Lewis once wrote that “we read to know we’re not alone.”  I’ve thought of that so often over the years.  If you need something to read, I just bet you’ll find something here worth your time.

Things We Couldn’t Say – This book is difficult to put down – a true story of a Dutch woman, Diet Eman, who was part of the Resistance in Nazi-occupied Holland during the Second World War.

Mere Christianity – I was introduced to this little book in college.  A beautifully written apologetic for the Christian faith.

At Home in Mitford – The first book in the Mitford series. You’ll love the characters and think of them as people you could easily be friends with!  A great book to tuck in the beach bag or read on a flight or road trip.

The Joyful Heart – One of my professors in college used this book as one of his teaching tools.  A yearly devotional packed tight with enriching excerpts from Watchmen Nee’s writings.

Hind’s Feet on High Places – An allegory of the Christian life – it’s been one of my favorite books since I read it as a young wife and momma.  Encouraging and hopeful.

Pride and Prejudice – Classic Jane Austen – can’t recommend it enough.

What’s So Amazing About Grace – My husband gave me this book when I was struggling with “being good enough”.  It was life changing – I remember taking it with me to church one morning thinking I might read it instead of listening to the sermon.  It was a life-line for me.  Yancey describes the grace of God in persuasive, personal and deeply accessible words.  This book goes right to the heart.

Daddy-Long-Legs – This 1912 story of an orphan “adopted” by an anonymous benefactor is just a treat.  It’s great for girls – ages 13-16 – and their mommas and grandma’s.  Heartwarming and  funny – the book is a series of letters that Judy writes to her sponsor and you will laugh out loud as you read.  It’s one of those books that just makes you feel good.

The Wind in the Willows – Kenneth Graham wrote this book out of the bedtime stories he told his young son.  Like so many books, however, it has profound lessons for all of us.  It chronicles the friendship of four anthropomorphized animals living in the countryside of England and there are parts of it so wise and striking that you’ll get tears in your eyes reading – just see if you don’t.

Wisdom from favorite authors

We can learn so much from other people…

Check back here often for quotes that inspire thoughtful living.

CS Lewis

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

Rich Mullins

“Jesus, write me into your story.  Whisper it to me, and let me know I’m yours.”

GK Chesterton

“Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, “Do it again”; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.”
